As the coordinator of Animal Health and Welfare at Cattle Empire, Dr. Tera Barnhardt works under Dr. Dave Sjeklocha to help develop and implement the initiatives that maintain cattle comfort and health at the four finishing facilities as well as Empire Calf Ranch.
Dr. Barnhardt graduated from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014 and during her tenure at K-State, completed a Master’s degree under Dr. Dan Thomson. Her graduate research involved implementing a feedyard assessment in Kansas feedyards, and it is through that project in which she first worked with Dr. Sjeklocha and the Cattle Empire team. It sparked her professional interest in animal welfare and beef quality assurance, and laid the groundwork for her professional development in feedlot medicine. Upon graduation, she worked as an associate in a mixed animal veterinary clinic until joining the Cattle Empire team in March of 2017.
Dr. Barnhardt grew up in Satanta on her family’s farm and ranch. She married her husband, Sheldon, in 2012, and they started a residential construction business. They welcomed their first son, Archie, in June of 2016 and say that they have had their hands and hearts full ever since.
